Extrusion Die Design Series – #1

Time Tested Extruder Dies - A Brief History of Our Roots in Die Design

Akron, OH – Founded in 1941 to provide precision machining for the rubber industry, Akron Tool & Die (ATD) experienced rapid growth and began servicing the plastic industry with extrusion dies and related components for polymer processing. Through the years, the company developed custom dies for a variety of applications including strip, pelletizing, blown film, plank, and sheet. Along the way, and in addition to die design, the company developed a reputation for machining highly complex parts with tight tolerances. “That’s An Akron Part” became synonymous with the quality and precision necessary to make a project successful.

Die design and engineering was given a boost in the late 1990’s when ATD expanded its product offerings by purchasing the assets of Akron Extruders. Renamed and rebranded Diamond America, the newly formed company offered extruder design along with screw and barrel rebuild.

Combining ATD’s die design team with Diamond’s extruder engineering team was an instant success that continues to deliver today. With manufacturing and engineering synergies under one roof, Diamond America quickly expanded into die and extruder design for plastics as well as silicon, rubber, catalysts, ceramics, carbon, adhesives, biomass, specialty foods and pet foods.

Akron Tool & Design and Diamond America are headquartered in Akron, OH and provide dies, extrusion equipment, and cutters internationally.
